Foal Finds Family
Help Him Gallop Into Recovery
On May 17, an endangered Asian wild horse foal was born at the Minnesota Zoo, with limb and tendon deformity issues. Within days, he developed bacterial sepsis and pneumonia and was separated from his mother to receive treatment. When he returned, his mom had lost her instinct to mother and nurse him. That’s when Alice, a domesticated mare who had recently lost her own foal, was brought in as a potential foster. With gentle nudges and nickers, Alice’s mothering instincts kicked in and she quickly began caring for the young foal as her own.
Today, both wild foal and foster mom Alice are growing and learning together — but there is a long road ahead and we need your help to ensure the foal’s recovery. Although his infections have resolved, he’s still recovering from the orthopedic issues he was born with, and the next four to six months are critical.
Help animals like this incredible foal gallop into recovery with your donation. Your gift will provide specialized nutrition and expert health care that ensure animals at the Zoo live long, healthy lives.
